H is for Helicopter, Hiking, Horse Races

One of our most exciting dates was the helicopter ride we took from Las Vegas to the edge of the Grand Canyon. It was not very expensive and well worth it. Funnily enough I almost didn’t book it for us because I was quite a bit heavier at the time and on the website it said that everyone had to get on the scale so that they could balance the weight in the helicopter. Of course in my mind I thought that it would be like some game show or boxing match where you step on a scale in front of everyone and they shout out the weight. NOW WEIGHING IN AT 205 POUNDS…JANET MILES.

I tried really hard to lose weight before we left but that was before I started Keto and only managed maybe 5 pounds. Of course it wasn’t anything like a boxing match. As you check in, there is a platform that you stand on and the weight registers on the computer in front of the customer service person. No one else sees the number. From that info they are able to pick the occupants of the helicopter and then you get called into groups.

We had a really nice pilot (he reminded me just a bit of Ben Affleck) and saw spectacular views of Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. The Grand Canyon is amazing, and we only saw one part of it! There are a couple of different helicopter companies that make this run and we saw them flying over while we were taking our break. On the way home we stopped to refuel before coming back to Vegas. It was funny to see all the helicopters lined up at the pumps just like at a gas station. Flying back in you get pretty close to the buildings.

And here’s a short video of what we saw as we came back in to Vegas. We were staying at the Excalibur Hotel, the one that looks like a castle…of course! I was glad that I didn’t know about the crash that one of the helicopters had doing this run until after we were home!

If a helicopter ride isn’t your thing how about about a trip to the racetrack? Horse Racing is another exciting outing. We went a couple of times before our local track, Bay Meadows, closed in 2008. The first time we went was for a fundraiser for our kids in high school. We had such a good time that we went back a few more times. It is exciting to watch the horses run, especially if you have a small wager on them (remember I’m fond of gambling?) We were sorry to see it close. Now there is a housing complex on the land. The next closest place to see horse racing is Golden Gate Fields and it is not that far away so maybe we’ll take a trip there.

When I was young, there was a famous racetrack right in my hometown of San Bruno. It was Tanforan Racetrack and while they stopped actual racing when I was 9, I do remember seeing the track. During World War II it was used as an internment camp for Japanese, although they called it an “assembly center.” Some famous horses raced there, including Seabiscuit. When the track closed they turned the area into a shopping mall but that has now been sold and they are going to build a biotech campus and housing. Where am I going to go when Barnes and Noble and Target close?

And one more idea, although with my husband’s heart and back issues we probably won’t do this together anytime soon, is hiking. When I was doing the A to Z of San Francisco last year I did a fair amount of hiking with the trip to Mt. Davidson and all the stairs. I was definitely glad I had lost weight by then because I probably wouldn’t have made it!

Okay, I hope I gave you some good ideas for dating through the letter H. Tomorrow is catch up on other blog day and honestly, the next few letters of the alphabet may have less pictures than these did but we’ll see what we can do.

  1. I've never been up in a helicopter, but I'd definitely love a fly over the grand canyon. I've only been to the track a couple times, but I'm an excellent choose-the-best-horse-names kind of better. Perhaps you can guess that i didn't make my fortune that way.

    1. LOL that's how I would pick them too! Or sometimes but the color outfit the jockey was wearing. Sometimes even the color of the horse. Not exactly scientific.

  2. Hi, Janet!

Happy Saturday and H-Day, dear friend!

I've never been aboard a helicopter, and therefore I enjoyed this ride along with you and your hubby, the pics and the video. It was fun to see Hoover Dam and Lake Mead from your vantage point in the whirlybird. Mrs. Shady and I visited the Grand Canyon on our trip out West in 2014. We drove up to the South Rim and spent the day exploring the scenic overlooks. I enjoyed your video showing the hotels, casinos and other tall buildings on the way back into Vegas.

I never went to the horse races either, but I went to a greyhound racing track here in St. Pete shortly after I moved to Florida in the mid 80s. Soon after, when I learned how poorly the hounds are treated, I decided not to support the industry. It was interesting to learn about the racetrack in your hometown where the legendary Seabiscuit raced. I saw that movie, and Mrs. Shady and I love to watch the Ky. Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes triple crown on TV every year.

I don't do a lot of hiking, but Mrs. S and I did some in the fall of 2020 when we visited the mountains of Western North Carolina. The biggest challenge of that trip was visiting the high elevation spot called Clingman Dome. From the parking lot, you are required to trek up a very steep grade and then up a steep ramp to an observation tower. From there you can see in all directions, on a clear day a distance of 50 miles covering several states. You really need to be in good shape to get up that mountain slope on foot. It took us around 90 minutes to get to the top because we needed to stop and catch our breaths every 50 feet.

Yesum, your series is giving us lots of great ideas for dates that married couples can enjoy, many of them low tech and low cost. Enjoy your day off tomorrow, dear friend Janet. I'll be back to join you on I-Day Monday!

    1. Oh wow, I bet the view from the Clingman Dome was spectacular. I am sure I'd need to catch my breath a few times too.

We watched the movie Seabiscuit too and it was fun to see Tanforan mentioned.

The helicopter ride was a lot of fun and I'd recommend it. Very different from flying in a plane but I wasn't scared.

Thanks for visiting again, dear friend. I hope I can continue to entertain. Have a happy Sunday.

  3. We took an airplane ride through the Grand Canyon years ago. It was a lot of fun even though I do not like flying, lol :) The views were spectacular! I'm not sure I could do a helicopter though. My SIL did and she had a great time on her adventures! Funny, when we visited the Grand Canyon for the first time in the 1980s we had no idea we would eventually live in the state of Arizona. It is magnificient indeed (the Grand Canyon). I've seen the Excalibur hotel but have not stayed in it when we have visited Las Vegas. I did do horse racing when we lived in San Diego and would go to Del Mar for their horse races but haven't in a long time. It was fun! And I'm not one to hike :)

Great theme you have for the A/Z Challenge! Enjoy the rest of it!

  4. You're braver than me. I'm not sure I could face a helicopter ride and horse racing is not really my thing either but hiking, yep I can do hiking!

    1. Well if one of the three ideas I suggest works, I consider it a successful post!

  5. When my husband and I visited Alaska, I wanted to go dog-sledding. We booked the experience with a dog-sled company that flew us by helicopter to a glacier where they kept the dogs during the summer. I would do that again in a heartbeat. It was soooo much fun!

We love hiking together, but I always insist that there better be something pretty to look at along the way, or at the end of the trail. Beautiful scenery, or a waterfall, or something interesting.

I've never been to a horse race, but I think it would be exciting to see!
