G is for Golf, Gambling, Geocaching

Early on I realized that I would have to take an interest in new things if I wanted our relationship to last. I am not a sports person but my hubby is. I talked about baseball, which was easy for me to get into and also bowling, which I enjoyed as well. Golf is another one of the sports my husband loves to play. It is not something that I wanted to participate in myself but I managed to find a way to enjoy it.

I was looking through our AAA magazine one day and found an advertisement for a 3 day, 2 night stay down in Boulder Creek. It included the villa rental and 3 rounds of golf so I booked it. We had the best time. We started having kids and didn’t go again until 10 years later when we went back with some friends and that was the start of the golf tournament that lasted over 20 years.

I’m not sure how it is now but back in the day I could go out with the guys and walk the course or ride in the cart even though I wasn’t golfing. Being out in the fresh air among the trees was so relaxing. There are some really beautiful courses. We even have one close to the ocean. It was also fun for me to watch him golf. He did let me hit a ball one time and he jokes that I hit it better than he did so he won’t let me play anymore. That’s not really true because we don’t have that kind of relationship. If I wanted to golf I certainly could. It’s an expensive game and not one I want to do. I’d rather spend the money on craft supplies – LOL. We are sad that Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club had to shut down because of the huge fires that ravaged the area a couple years ago. I am SO glad I made the scrapbooks of our times there.

While my husband likes his sports, I like my slot machines so gambling is another date idea. We just went to Graton Casino for my birthday. Hubby likes to play poker so he usually goes and hits the tables for a while but then he’ll come and find me and we’ll play the slots together. We used to go to Reno for our anniversary and spend a few days there. The Silver Legacy Casino would send us coupons for free nights. Since the pandemic they stopped sending the coupons so we haven’t gone.

One thing I’d like to try is Geocaching. According to Wiki, Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where you use GPS (like your phone) to find hidden caches. These are usually containers with a note pad and pen and sometimes they hold trinkets which you can take and then replace with something else. The first documented geocaching was done in 2000 in Oregon. There are a couple of different sites where you can register and get a code name. Then when you are traveling you can go to the site and see if there are any geocaches in your area.

Most of the time there is nothing too valuable in the containers. If we started doing it, these are a few of the things that I might leave for someone else to find.

All righty then. We made it through a week! Are you still with me? Ever do geocaching? Let me know if it is something I should look into further. One more post this week and then we rest on Sunday – well, I won’t rest because I have to visit other people and try to come up with more date ideas!

  1. Hi, Janet!

Ha! It's funny, I just spent 15 minutes reading your 2017 post and forgot that I wasn't reading today's post. :) That shows how much I enjoyed seeing pictures of you, your hubby and your ever growing group of friends taking part in the annual gentlemen's tourney at Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club over the years. The event looks like a wonderful opportunity for friends to catch up once a year and enjoy a lovely, well manicured course and smart, comfy accomodations at the villas. I am sorry to learn that fire forced the closing of the CC. I hope it can open again someday soon, so that you guys and your friends can resume the tradition.

As a boy,I played lots of miniature golf, then graduated to par 3 pitch & putt courses and finally went out on regulation courses with my dad. I'll never forget the day, at age 11, when I stood atop a high hill at the tee of a par 3 hole. The flag and pin were far below and quite a distance away. Using an iron, I swung with all my might and immediately feared that I had hit the ball too hard. I expected it to sail over the green and wind up in the water hazard beyond. To my surprise and my dad's delight, the ball dropped onto the green and backed up, coming to rest 18 inches from the cup. My dad shouted, "You're gonna be a golfer! You're gonna be a golfer!" As it turned out, my short game did not live up to the awesomeness of that fateful drive. I missed the putt that would have given me my first eagle. I haven't gone golfing since those outings with my dad as a boy and a teenager, nor do I gamble. The GPS Geocaching challenge sounds like a heck of a lot of fun. It would be like searching for and finding the Hidden Immunity Idol on Survivor, or like locating the big "W" and the treasure beneath it as the group of characters did in the comedy film It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I like your ideas for Janet style goodies to leave behind when you find the containers.

Thank you for another entertaining post on G-Day, dear friend Janet. I'll be back to see what the "H" you've got in store for tomorrow. :) Enjoy your Friday!

    1. Oh, how exciting an eagle would have been! I wonder if you would have continued in the sport had you made that putt. We did have some wonderful times at the Country Club and I have 4 full scrapbook albums to prove it. I am not sure what the guys are going to do. Last year there was no tournament at all. September felt empty. Happy Friday to you too good buddy.

  2. I've never learned to golf but I think the courses are beautiful! Someone told us that we should take our granddaughters and geocache in Moss Rock Preserve which is LITERALLY across the street from our neighborhood. We've never done it but here is a list of things to look for: https://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=315d1272-cb0e-46a8-a431-02563d4e68ba

  3. Hi, Janet - I know nothing about Geocatching but definitely think you should give it a try (and post about it for all of us). :D I don't golf but I LOVE that my husband does -- it is a great time for me to catch up on other stuff.

    1. I feel the same way about my husband golfing. I know I'll have 3 o4 4 hours of uninterrupted time in the studio. You know I'll write about geocaching for sure.

  4. Neither of us have ever been into golf and gambling was limited to taking the kids to amusement arcades when they were younger. Geocaching was quite a thing here a few years back. Not sure how popular it is since the pandemic limited our activities.

    1. Good point about the pandemic limiting geocaching. Maybe if I was doing it now I'd make sure to bring along wipes!

  5. We go to putt-putt golf (miniature golf) now and then, and we used to play golf on "wii", but as for "real" golfing, I've never tried. A friend tried to teach my husband how to golf last year, but that didn't last long... he didn't enjoy it.

Our grandkids love geocaching and we've thought about doing that, too.

    1. Golf can get expensive so best not to do it if it's not fun. I think I really will research that geocaching thing.
