A to Z Challenge - 2020 - Jessie's Girl

I'm using a song title for my letter again, J is for "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield.  We are at the Mountain Winery and although Springfield was the headliner, there were three other groups playing that night.  Tommy Tutone opened followed by Greg Kihn and then Loverboy.  Truthfully I think we went to see Loverboy but the whole show was a good one.  Because I'm already behind I'm just going to scrapbook the Rick Springfield pictures now.  The others will have to wait.

Paper Wishes papers.  It's called "Charming." Love the rich colors.

Even though I am not making pages for the other bands yet, I needed to include them on the title page.  I have some papers left so I'll be able to use those for Tommy, Greg and Loverboy but will probably have to mix in others.  Good thing that kind of paper is not in short supply around here!

I used the stained glass template again but didn't get quite as detailed with cutting up the pictures.  I put some Dazzles stickers in the corners.

He had a screen behind him which not all the acts at the Winery do.  Almost made it seem like he was at a bigger venue.  He also left the stage and went walking through the crowd.  That is always fun to see.

I used the "Arrows" stencil to sketch that.

The drummer, Jorge Palacios, was pretty good.  Rick sang 12 songs.  I didn't realize he had that many!  Did you know his real name is Richard Lewis Springthorpe?  I did not!

I used this Nuvo Glitter Drop to make a center in the flowers on the page.

He had a really neat looking guitar on the stage before he came out so I had to grab a picture.

Saving the best for last, Jessie's Girl was the encore.

And in the album it will look like this, almost, because I'll fit the other bands in between these pages.

The paper on one of those pages is not from the original collection.  I added it to include some extra pictures.  Can you tell which one it is?

Here is "Jessie's Girl" as we saw it.

The "joint" was certainly jumping that night.  (Joint is the Stream of Consciousness prompt for today.  Thanks Linda!)

I have to admit that I don't have the rest of the alphabet already finished.  I'm going to try and do as much as I can with our "free" day tomorrow but I'm not holding out much hope that I'm going to make it.  I'll continue with the alphabet as planned but the scrapbooking is going to be hit and miss.  Oh well, such is life, right?

  3. Hi, Janet!

Looks like the Mountain Winery is your home away from home, dear friend. I can understand why. It's a beautiful venue and ideal for live concerts. I know all of these recording acts and envy you and your hubby getting to see them play in the same show. In the early 80s I was a freelance DJ. I owned 12-inch dance length singles of "Jeopardy" by Greg Kihn Band and "Working For The Weekend" by Loverboy. Greg Kihn is four months older than Shady.

Aussie singer, musician and actor Rick Springfield is three months older than Shady. I had been a regular viewer of General Hospital since the 60s when Steve Hardy, Jessie Brewer and Audrey March were the main characters, long before the Luke & Laura story line caused ratings to explode through the roof in the late 70s and early 80s. I well remember Rick Springfield joining the cast during those wildly popular years of the soap. He played Dr. Noah Drake from 1981 to 1983 while riding high as a real life touring rock star thanks to his album Working Class Dog and breakthrough hit single "Jessie's Girl." The song played on the radio through much of 1981 because it made a very slow climb to the top of the chart, its zenith coinciding with the launch of MTV. By chance Mrs. Shady and I heard "Jessie's Girl" playing through the sound system at a restaurant a couple of months ago (pre-quarantine) and I remarked that it is the quintessential rock song. Just when you think the song is reaching the fade-out point, it shifts gears and launches into a new and different verse with more cool lyrics that tell the truth about unrequited love plus more great guitar work by Rick. I'll say it again. It's the perfect rock song. The recording has very high commercial appeal, (I call it "listenability"), but enough of a rock edge to give it cred and durability. I never grow tired of hearing it. I believe men like Rick as much as the women do. He is not simply another pretty boy rock star wannabe. He's for real. In fact, I enjoy all of his singles, and the MTV station where I worked played them often including "Rock of Life," an amazing 1988 song and video that is a favorite of mine alongside "Jessie's Girl."

It's neat that Rick left the stage and went crowd surfing. I love the flamingo and green color combo and the boxed pics. You took many excellent shots of the show, a priceless collection of memories to bring that exciting night back alive. Yessum, Rick is prolific as he as terrific. He had a good run of his singles during the 80s and I remember our station playing his videos for "Don't Talk To Strangers," "Affair Of The Heart" and "Human Touch." I watched the clip and noticed that the audience went wild as Rick ended his set with his signature song "Jessie's Girl." I liked how Rick and the band stretched out the song with several false endings and also appreciated seeing footage from his official music video playing on the big screen behind him - a nice touch!

I really enjoyed this one, Janet. The early 80s were very exciting years of my life, my second bachelorhood. I would have loved being there at the Winery to hear the popular songs of those years performed by Rick and the other original artists.

Don't fret over your unfinished posts, Janet. Blogging is about fun and friendship, making a connection and showing support. Have a restful Sunday and I'll see you tomorrow, dear friend!

  4. It's funny, I never watched General Hospital when Rick was on it. I do remember the Steve Hardy, Jessie Brewer and Audrey March days though. Then I started working after school so no time for TV. If you ever make it out this way you should really check out the Winery. I just got a notice that when they open they will be decreasing the number of shows you have to see to remain in the Loyalty Club to only three. It was previously four. That is one membership I want to continue! Have a nice Easter and thanks again for all the insights you bring to my little posts!

  5. I wonder how long it takes you to put one of these scrapbooks together. They look so intricate and detailed I'm not surprised you're struggling to keep up with the A-Z. Happy Easter!

    1. Hi Wendy. Some take longer than others. If I have a lot to say or a lot of good pictures, they take longer. I'm so happy to have my studio because I can leave everything out while I'm working on it and not have to worry stuff will get in the way. I also try out new techniques too, so that may take some extra time. Thanks for stopping by. Happy Easter to you too!

    1. Thanks Birgit. If you can't tell right away which one is not with the set then that means it matches well.

  7. Great pictures!
Funny story- I know someone named Jessie who is a girl and a lesbian and at karaoke frequently sings this song, which amuses her dates when it's the first time they've seen her do it. (Some of us have seen that performance one too many I'm-gonna-need-another-drink-here times. LOL.)
