Blogging From A to Z - 2018 - Y is for

Welcome to the letter Y in the A to Z Challenge for 2018.  We are down to the last two days here in the A to Z of Michaels Arts and Crafts.  The letter Y is definitely for Yarn.

Yarn has a whole section of its own.  There are so many different colors and thicknesses of yarn for any kind of project from blankets to hats to baby items.  It's hard to tell from my pictures but the yarn in the picture on the right is SO big.  You can kind of tell on the teal one on the bottom and the cream colored one above it how thick the strands are.  If you look at the same teal color in the picture on the left the strands look much thinner.  I have no idea what people do with the yarn so thick.

Red Heart, Loops and Threads and Vanna White are some of the brands.

Yarn can be expensive so it is kind of a big deal when there is a sale.

These are called Sugar and Cream.  I don't know why they want to call yarn by food names but whatever.

They call these Caron Cakes.  They come in Big Cakes, Cakes and Cupcakes.  Mix them with the Sugar and Cream above and you have cakes with frosting - LOL.  I think they are pretty neat in that when you are making something you don't have to change colors, it is automatic.  I suppose you might have to pay attention to what pattern you are making so that the colors match but mostly I make blankets and shawls so I think it would be okay.

Perhaps these big knitting needles are for the large yarns.  I don't think I'm coordinated enough to handle something so big.  I'm not a knitter anyway, crochet is my thing.

Fortunately there are plenty of both knitting needles and crochet hooks to satisfy everyone.  Well, almost everyone.  One of the unpleasant experiences I had while working was with a customer who could not find the size needle she was looking for.  When I tried to help her she was less than courteous as I explained to her that we didn't seem to have the size she was wanting.  It ended up with me calling the manager over because I just could not satisfy her.  I had to bite my tongue and not tell this lady she was wacko.  It was situations like this that reminded me how lucky I had been to be able to work for myself from home for the last 18 years and it helped me make the decision to stop working at Michaels.  I mean, look at this selection!

There are even loom sets for those more adventurous.

And lots of instructional books and patterns to chose from for all manner of things.

Even the Celebrity baby fashions!  How cute is that?

Two of the scarves that I crocheted are on sale in my Etsy shop.  I got the yarn from Michaels :)

Okay, tomorrow is a day of rest from the A to Z and then Monday is our grand finale, Z.  Hope you'll be able to make it to the end with me.

(Note:  I decided I should add a disclaimer to these posts because I certainly don't want to give the idea that I am being paid by Michaels to do this or that they are furnishing me with material.  All pictures used in this blog series were taken by me at local Michaels stores, or are my personal pictures and every Michaels store may not have everything shown.)

  1. Lovely crocheted scarves Janet. I'm not a very good knitter, but I've done a few projects, including a tote bag knitted from a very thick wool. I then felted it. I LOVE that bag!

    1. Thanks, Deborah. One of the things I've always wanted to try my hand at was a tote bag. I think it should be relatively easy since it's just straight pieces, but I haven't done it yet.

  2. I guess yarn was the obvious choice for "Y" for you (except in Australia we call it wool - so it would have to have gone under "W") It's been lovely meeting you through the challenge and I'm looking forward to getting back to my normal blogging routine next week - I think I'm running on empty with this one!

    1. Interesting, especially since not all yarn is made of wool! It has been a wild month, hasn't it? I need to plan something for May that will be fun. I'm glad I met you too, Leanne. Part of the perks of the A to Z every year.

  3. I don't knit, so this is an aisle I rarely go down, but I like looking at knitted and crocheted items for sale at craft fairs.

    1. I don't visit these aisles often either since I'm mostly a paper crafter but I love the colors and every so often I try to crochet something.

  4. Great post. I have no knitting or crocheting talent, but I love looking at all the kinds of yarn.

    1. Aren't there some pretty colors there? I wish I could do something with it besides make blankets. You can have too many blankets!

  5. I am still working on (crochet) an afghan I started in high school (years upon years upon years ago). Last year I bought a whole bunch more yarn to continue working on the project but I never seem to get around to it.

    1. I have a few skeins in my closet myself! I buy them because I like the colors but without a project, they just sit there.

  6. LOL... How did I forget to read your Yarn post... seems it's all I do lately is Knit if I'm not writing. Have you knitted any socks? I finally overcame my apprehension to learn and I so enjoy them now. Hubby recently cut me a few tiny wood sock blockers for my key chain and I've been knitting tiny tiny socks using magic loop. I taught myself that last year and enjoy it - do you know how? I think I've knitting so many tiny socks that its made my hand ache, so taking a break away from them. I've spent most of April visiting mom as she took a fall... good thing my posts were written, just basically reedited them nightly. I see you have an Etsy store, I'll check it out. My friend wants me to start one with her, but I have 5 granddaughters who I'm always making things for and Nancy Drew keeps me busy. haha. stay in touch. Jeanne

    1. LOL I am not a knitter. I have crocheted but just simple things like blankets and shawls. Nothing as detailed as a sock :) So many pretty colors of yarns! The Etsy shop is fun and I love making things for it. Mostly cards and paper projects. I've followed you so we will stay in touch!
