Sweet September - 2018 - #SLS Song Lyric Sunday

Our friend Helen has given us the prompt of "Search" for today's Song Lyric Sunday.  The first thing I thought of was Chicago's "Searching So Long" but that was too easy.  I wanted to try and get a song from Def Leppard or Journey so I could use some pictures from the concert that we went to last week but my mind was a blank, except for a Foreigner song, but I've already used Foreigner in a #SLS prompt so I didn't want to use them again.

I love the movie Urban Cowboy with John Travolta and Debra Winger.  The soundtrack has some really good songs.  This is one.

Urban Cowboy came before Officer and a Gentleman and Terms of Endearment for Debra Winger and after Saturday Night Fever for John Travolta.  It was a great boost for country music and I remember that a local country bar put in a mechanical bull.

Sweet September -2018 #SLS Song Lyric Sunday

Today's prompt from Helen is "Sleep."  Hope you are feeling better, Helen. 

My choice for this week is "Sleeping With The Telephone" by Reba McIntyre and Faith Hill.  It is off the "Duets" album Reba made several years ago with a few of her friends.  There are some really good songs on it.  This is about all those women who's mates are in the service of their country, either in the military or in police and fire departments.  I think we sometimes forget the sacrifices they make in their lives as well.  My husband was a truck driver for a while and one day I did get a call about an accident.  Changed our lives (he was not physically injured but emotionally is sometimes worse).  Even that is not the same as this type of worry.

Sweet September - 2018 #SLS Song Lyric Sunday

Helen's prompt for Song Lyric Sunday is "Glass."  I usually try to use songs from artists we have seen so I can include pictures from our concert adventures because I'm sure everyone likes to see those (LOL) but for this prompt when I went to my iTunes playlist to come up with one, there was nothing by anybody we have seen yet.

However, I did find this one by Leona Lewis and I would see her if she is touring near me.  There are several of her songs that I really enjoy.  This is one of them.  It's got a catchy beat and I find myself doing a little dance when it comes on.

Sweet September - 2018 #SoCS

Today's prompt from the lovely Linda for the Stream of Consciousness Saturday is "Post."

I didn't just want to use the obvious post as in blog post but then I realized that I had never posted the pictures from our trip to Oregon in July.  We went to visit hubby's mother and were there for a week.  Since she is in her 90's and takes naps during the day we had some time to do some exploring. 

We went to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument to see the Lava Butte which is a huge area of post volcanic lava. 

We went on the bus ride that took us up to the top where we could see for miles.   

Post bus ride, there was a bit of a hike to get to the top but we made it.

It was pretty amazing to see.  

There was still snow on the distant mountains. 

They literally built this right around the edge of where the lava stopped.  

There was a sentry posted near the exit.

Post volcanic monument, we stopped briefly at the High Desert Museum.

We didn't feel the need to pay the entrance fee to get inside the museum but there were some pretty interesting sculptures positioned around the garden entrance.  

This was impressive. 

In the parking lot we saw some really neat old autos.

Sweet September - 2018 Reading Challenge

I've been posting lots about songs lately but I've also done some reading.  In fact, I'm over the goal of 25 books that I had set for myself at the beginning of the year.  True, some of those books were children's books that I read for the Children's Readathon hosted by Jay Cudney but I think that I'll have plenty of time to read "adult" books to equal that amount before the end of the year. 

Speaking of Mr. Cudney, the book I just finished was his latest book, "Father Figure."  This is his second book and it was very good.  It tells the tale of two girls set two decades apart and is told in alternating chapters.  It is very easy to read and you can follow the twists and turns in the story without problem.  He ties up the connections well, but not until the end. 

Coincidentally, he used my name for one of the characters!  I always love seeing my name in print, however, the character he gave my name to is one of the least likable in the book!  I mentioned it to Jay and he assured me that he "thinks" he had the name picked out before we became friends in the blog world and that he  I am nothing like the woman in his story - LOL.  I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from James J. Cudney in the future.  He also wrote "Watching Glass Shatter" about another family with secrets and I'm hoping to hear more about the Glass family as well.  You can get his books as Kindle editions on Amazon but I prefer the hardcopy.  I used this book in my Challenge category of "Books with alliteration in the title."  Thanks, Jay!   

Before "Father Figure" I read another book about two girls, "Two Girls In Blue" by Mary Higgins Clark.  This is about the kidnapping of twin three-year-olds and the strong connection that they have in that when one of the girls is found alive and the other one is said to be dead, the one that is alive gives strong signals that her sister is still alive. 

I was interested in this book because my mother is a twin.  She has never said anything about getting such intense signals from my aunt and vice versa.  I do see how it might be possible, however, especially in such little girls.  I used this book to complete my "Book about twins" category.  

My current book is "A Common Struggle" by Patrick J. Kennedy.  I have always loved reading about the Kennedy Family.  I am not as familiar with the younger generation so when I saw this book on sale at Office Depot I decided to pick it up and give it a shot.  It tells the story of his journey through mental illness and addiction.  This family certainly has their share of issues, right?  

Happily, this will fill my category of "Book about mental illness."  Have you been reading any good books lately?  I still have a few categories to fill such as a book with weather in the title, a book with an ugly cover or a book published in 2018.  Suggestions?  

Sweet September - 2018 #SLS

Today's Song Lyric Sunday prompt from Helen is "Picture/Photograph."  This is another fun one for me and I have done something that I've been wanting to try for a while now, creating a slideshow.  It is pretty basic and not perfect because I'm doing it quickly so I can use it this week.  I plan on making another one when I have time to work on it more.

Anyway, the song I have chosen is "Pictures of You" by The Cure.  This is a band that I just recently realized that I like a lot.  We were on our way to Reno earlier in the year and since I do the driving, my husband plays DJ.  He and I have somewhat different musical tastes although we have a lot of bands in common.  He put in a Cure CD and I really liked this song.  I think it fits so well in my slideshow.  Here are the lyrics:

Last year I challenged myself to take 365 pictures.  I wrote about it several times during the year.  Here is a post from July.  I have always had it in mind to make a slideshow of those photos and when Helen suggested the prompt for this week, I knew I had to give it a shot.  I used a slightly extended version of the song because it takes some time to get through the pictures, even though I used one of the fastest forms of the slideshow.  Here it is:

I'd love to know what you think of my first slideshow attempt.  I didn't get all the pictures numbered and notated which is something I wanted to do.  I found that the "Origami" format that I used cut some of the pictures as well which is something I will keep in mind when I try it again.   Hope you have a happy Sunday!  Make sure to stop by the other players in the #SLS group.  Lots of good music out there!

Sweet September - 2018 #SLS

For Song Lyric Sunday our prompt is "car/cars."  The song that popped into my head first was the Beatles, "Baby You Can Drive My Car" but I don't like using the first thing that pops into my head.

I remember that Bob Seger had an album out called "Ride Out" a few years ago and that there was a song on the album (are they called that still?) about a car.  It is a "deuce and a quarter" but I had no clue what that meant.  Apparently it is a Buick Electra 225 which were made between 1959 and 1990.  This one is a 1977 version.

We have seen Bob Seger in concert a few times and have tickets to a show he had to cancel because he was having neck problems.  I hope he gets better and can continue the tour!  Here are some scrapbook pages I made from the pictures I took at the concert.

My first car was a Plymouth Valiant.  I named him "Prince" after the Prince Valiant cartoon strip (which truthfully I never read, I just liked the name!)

Sweet September - 2018 #SoCS

I didn't post as much last month as I thought I would but truthfully there was kind of a lot going on, some of which was unplanned. 

Rounding it all up, we saw some concerts:

We went to a couple of baseball games:

We caught Shawn Estes and Rich Aurelia getting ready for the pregame show outside AT&T Park.  Hubby said, "Smile for my wife please guys" and they did!

I read a few books:

Actually, I read quite a few books this month but it was because most of them were children's books.  I also read a mystery by Mary Higgins Clark, "Two Little Girls In Blue" which was very interesting about twin toddlers who were kidnapped.  One was returned but the other one was kept because the kidnapper wanted a child.  It told about the girl who was returned to the parents experiencing the bad things that were happening to the one that was kept.  I wonder if that really happens with twins.  My mom is a twin and I am not sure those things ever happened to her.

I also made a baby book for a friend who just had her first baby.

And I made a card or two for the Etsy shop.

A selfie for the month too.  Note the round clock in the background.  I've had that for over 40 years as it was mine before we were married!

That does not include the things I don't have pictures for but which certainly happened, my husband being admitted to the hospital overnight for a rapidly beating heart (not just because he loves me) and I ran over (and probably killed) a dog who had not been on a leash and ran under my car as I turned a corner.

Some happy, some sad, some music, some sports...quite a well-rounded month, don't you think?
